Chapter Eight

The next day, she hurried home after work to change into a nicer outfit, then went down with Bridget to wait for Antonio. He was picking them up, since otherwise they would have to call for a ride. Sometimes not having a car was inconvenient, but Cassie felt that she didn't need one enough for it to be worth buying one. Plus, she'd have to pay for parking, and the lot was nearly a block away, and in the opposite direction of the pizzeria. It made more sense to live with the occasional inconvenience than it did for her to pay a ridiculous amount of money for a vehicle she might use once a week or less.

When the SUV pulled up outside the apartment building, Cassie nodded to the security guard and went out with Bridget to get inside. Antonio cleaned up nicely, and she shot him a grin as she buckled in.

“I like what you did with your hair.”

He touched his gelled hair self-consciously. “You do? I wasn't sure about it.”

She nodded. “It looks good.”

“So does yours,” he said with a smile. “Well, it always does.”

Cassie felt Bridget kick the back of her seat, and she flushed, knowing that if she turned to look at her sister one or both of them would break out into giggles. She really needed to go out alone with Antonio more. Going places with her nineteen-year-old little sister in tow really put a damper on her style.

Antonio drove them out of the city and down the coast, letting out a low whistle when he saw the retirement community. “This is nice.”

He eased the vehicle into the complex and followed Cassie's directions. Someone—probably Evan, the groundskeeper—was carefully edging the sidewalk across the road, and the cones had been removed from the end of Nonna's driveway, leaving an expanse of freshly laid concrete for them to park on.

The three of them got out of the SUV and made their way to Nonna's front door. It opened before any of them could knock on it, and Ellie welcomed them in. The air-conditioning was cranked up inside, and Cassie wondered if Nonna liked it so cold because she was used to living in Maine.

The same Chihuahua Cassie had seen before greeted them with a bark, and as Antonio shut the door behind them, Ellie smiled and bent down to pick her up.

“This is Amie,” she said. “My grandmother rescued her from a shelter a few years ago. She's a sweetheart, but she likes to pretend she's a watchdog.”

“She's adorable,” Cassie said, smiling as Bridget cooed over the little dog. “She's smaller than my cat.”

Ellie put the dog down and welcomed them further in, leading them toward the kitchen. “I didn't know you had a cat. What's her name? Or his?”

“Her name is Sparrow,” Cassie said, pulling a picture up on her phone. She was always glad to show her pretty little tortoiseshell off.

Once they reached the kitchen, where Nonna was pouring them glasses of lemonade, they went around and introduced themselves.
